Adam Kendell is the husband of Mary Ingalls and the father of Adam Kendall Jr. who died in a fire at the Harriet Oleson Institute for Blinded Children along with Alice Garvey. Mary originally met Adam when she was living at the Iowa School for the Blind, where Adam was one of the teachers.

A few years later, Adam was involved in a freak accident which restored his sight, and became a lawyer.
