In an episode that marks the turning point for both the characters and the series in general, Albert and a friend, Clay, inadvertently cause a fire at the School for the Blind, killing Alice Garvey and Mary's infant son. After Albert unwittingly causes Mary to snap out of her trance, he runs away to his old home in Olney only to find a grave that says J.
