Joe Kagan moves to Sleepy Eye to work for Jonathan. While making a delivery to the blind school, he offers to help do some repairs. He has always had feelings for Hester-Sue Terhune and he tells her how he feels. Hester admits to Mary that she loves Joe, but he reminds her of her first husband and she can't go through that heart break again. Hester accepts a marriage proposal from Hertzell.
