Giles Kendall

Giles Kendall is Adam kendall's [Mary's husband] father. Giles had a very peculiar realationship with his son Adam. It all started when Adam and his father, Giles, were out fishing by a stream, years ago when Adam was about 9 years old. While they were fishing, Adam walked along a few rocks and tripped, causing him to fall into the stream. Adam suffered a severe concussion and woke up in the hospital, to find that he was blind. Giles kendall [Adam's father], being a succesful lawyer in New York, felt ashamed and embarrased of being the father of a 9 year old boy, who was blind, and ended up neglecting his blind son, Adam. However,inspite of all this, Adam grows up to be a stong, independent man. He becomes a very succesul school teacher for the blind, and meets his future wife, Mary Ingalls[who is also blind], while teaching at "The Burton School for the Blind" in Vinton, Iowa. The two fall deeply in love and get married the following year. Soon after, Mary becomes pregnant with their first child, and secretly contacts Giles Kendall, in secret. Mary informs Giles, in a letter, that she and his son Adam, are expecting their first child. When Adam finds out abpout this, he becomes angry, but accepts the fact that Giles should have some realationship with his grandchild. A week later, Giles comes to walnut grove, and suggests to Adam and Mary, to move to New York, and for Adam to become a lawyer and work in his father's firm. But this all changes when Mary misscaries her and Adam's son, a month later. When Giles finds out that his misscarried grandchild was a boy, he becomes deeply hurt, and moves back to New York, not wanting to see Adam or Mary again. After a year, Mary becomes pregnant for the second time and gives brth to Giles Kendall's first Grandson, Adam Charles Holbrook Kendall. Even though Giles is informed abot the birth of his Grandson, he does not make a visit to see Adam Jr. However, a few months later when Adam and Mary's home and school for the blind is burned to the ground in a fire, along with their first and only son, Adam Kendall Jr, Giles arranges for a new school to be built in Honour of his Grandson, Adam Jr and Alice garvey, who also died in the fire, trieing to save Adam Jr from being killed. A few weeks later, Adam and Mary are sent a letter from Giles' law firm in New York, to say that Giles kendall has died in his sleep.
