It was released in region one on June 29, 2004 and in region two on August 4, 2008. In the United States, original episodes from season five aired from September 11, 1978 to March 19, 1979.
In the television rankings for 1978 to 1979 season five ranked in at number 14.[1]

- Due to the economic problems the Ingalls, Olesons and Garveys leave Walnut Grove and settle in Winoka for a time.
- Walnut Grove is revitalized by its former residents. Lars Hanson dies.
- Mary and Adam's relationship grows and they eventually marry and have a child.
- Albert comes to live with the Ingalls.
- Due to lack of money, the Winoka School for the Blind in Winoka is forced to close but the citizens of Walnut Grove, most especially Mrs. Oleson donate money to turn Hanson's old house into a new school for the blind, dubbed the Harriet Oleson School for the Blind, run by Hester-Sue Terhune and Adam Kendall.
